The setting
Rome in the age of Caesar
Gladiator fights began in Rome as funeral games. By the first century BC they had become huge public shows, paid for by politicians who wanted the crowd on their side; Julius Caesar staged games with hundreds of pairs of fighters. Most gladiators were enslaved people, prisoners of war or condemned men, trained in schools where each learned to fight with a particular set of weapons. A few were free men who signed up for the money and the fame.
The most famous gladiator of all belongs to the same century. In 73 BC Spartacus broke out of a gladiator school in Capua with about seventy others and led a slave revolt that beat several Roman armies before it was crushed in 71 BC.
Gladiators: Survival in Rome borrows that world - the training school, the arena, the long road from nobody to champion - and plays it as historical fantasy, not as a history lesson.
